Holger Rune is set to achieve another major milestone in his career as he will reach world No. 4 for the first time when the rankings are updated on Monday, August 21.
20-year-old Rune has had a successful season so far. The Dane reached two ATP 1000 titles earlier this year and broke into the top 5 in the
ATP rankings last week, replacing Norway's Casper Ruud who dropped to seventh.
Now, Rune is set to not only extend his time in the top 5, but will move up to fourth, replacing current No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas. This means that Rune will enter the US Open next week as the fourth seed, ranked behind Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev who are the first, second and third seeds respectively.
Rankings rise comes after first-round defeat
Ironically, Rune's rise in the rankings comes after he went out in the first round that he played in at his last two tournaments, the
Canadian Open last week and the
Cincinnati Open this week.
Rune was defeated in his opening round at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto, losing to qualifier Marcos Giron 2-6, 6-4, 3-6. He then retired in his most recent match against Mackenzie McDonald while trailing 4-6, 0-2, citing a back injury.
However, after Tsitsipas lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the Round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, he dropped 510 points, bringing him down from 5,090 to 4,580. Meanwhile, Rune stays at 4,790 points.
Rune 10th youngest player to be world No. 4
This means that Rune is set to become the 10th youngest player to hold the position of world No. 4. He slots in ahead of Lleyton Hewitt, who went on to be world No. 1 at 20 years, 8 months, and 26 days.
23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic sits just one position ahead of Rune, highlighting the potential that players who rise in the rankings at a young age can have throughout their careers.
According to the live ATP rankings, the other big movers this week include Adrian Mannarino, who has jumped up nine places to No. 23 after reaching the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open. Meanwhile, his opponent in that match Alexander Zverev has gone up five places from No. 17 to No. 12 due to reaching the semi-finals. 2022 Cincinnati Open champion Borna Coric went out in the Round of 32 this year, causing him to drop 13 places to No. 29.
