Andrey Rublev is the champion at the 2024 Hong Kong Open after defeating Emil Ruusuvuori fairly comfortably in the final 6-4, 6-4 in the first staging of the tournament since 2002.
Usually reserved for WTA players with Leylah Fernandez the last winner in late 2023, it returned to the calendar as a lead up for the Australian Open with Rublev as top seed. It is a 15th career title for 'Rublo' as the Russian ace made a perfect start to his 2024.
Playing UTS and World Tennis League, Rublev hasn't really stopped since the season ended. But he has been aided this week by his top seed status meaning he played late on. He defeated Liam Broady before a tough three set clash with rising star Arthur Fils as well as Juncheng Shang back-to-back.
In comparison, his tie with Ruusuvuori was a bit more easier. It was as usual with this scoreline, the tale of one break between the sets. It was 4-3 up for Rublev where he sealed the opening gambit as he took two chances to do it but secured it. He then had set points at 5-3 up, but failed to convert from 40-15 and then had three more and was nearly broken by the Finn. But he held firm and found his way through.
Set two was a dominant break as he secured it at 40-0 on the Ruusuvuori serve to go 5-4 up and head towards the finishing line and this was the final nail in the coffin as he romped to the win from there. A successful week for Rublev.
