Daniil Medvedev and
Andrey Rublev won on Thursday and advanced to the Erste Bank Open Vienna quarterfinals.
The first great match on Thursday in Vienna started in the afternoon when Daniil Medvedev stepped onto the courts to take on
Vasek Pospisil. Medvedev came back to win the match after losing the opening set 4-6 6-3 6-2. Vasek has been playing very good indoor tennis earlier in the year and that good form continued in the previous round when he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime. One of those major victories back in February was against Medvedev in Rotterdam. It was a similar thing in the opening set as well as Pospisil found ways to frustrate Medvedev eventually breaking him to take a 5-3 lead. He would successfully fend off two break points later to clinch the opening set 6-4.
Medvedev was determined not to repeat the mistakes he did in St. Petersburg so he came out aggressive in the second set. Slowly but surely he was dictating the tempo and he soon found ways to attack Vasek's great serve. While the Canadian held him off in two separate games Medvedev finally broke him in the 3rd which proved enough to secure the 2nd set 6-3.
The final set opened with Medvedev completely in control of the match and rallies in general. He looked comfortable on the court while Vasek looked very nervous. His serve held for a game but soon Medvedev completely took over breaking him twice in a row to take a 5-1 lead. He would quickly go on to end the match with 6-2. In the 2nd match, Andrey Rublev took on
Jannik Sinner. Sinner didn't look good to start the match and only 3 games in he decided to retire from the match. The cause of retirement was cited as a right foot injury and we hope to see the youngster back on the courts very soon.
