Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from another event following his injury at the Australian Open and will be replaced by former top-10 player Fabio Fognini. The Australian, who has battled injuries over the past two years, made his return to the Tour with two tournaments in his home country.
However, injuries continue to trouble the 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who underwent wrist surgery a year ago. Despite the long layoff, he displayed a competitive level upon his comeback.
Kyrgios, known as one of the biggest showmen on the ATP Tour, has been a regular at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), an exhibition series held worldwide. The next edition is set to take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, from February 14 to 16.
While Kyrgios was expected to participate, UTS ultimately announced that he would be replaced by Italian veteran Fabio Fognini, who has previously featured in other UTS events.
"Fabio Fognini is back at UTS," the tournament posted on social media. "The Italian, who was part of UTS4 in 2021, will play our Guadalajara event this week."
"He replaces Nick Kyrgios, who did everything he could to overcome his injury from the Australian Open but just couldn’t make it. Fognini takes his place in Group A."
Kyrgios last appeared in a UTS event in late 2024 in New York, where he faced Casper Ruud in one of his first matches back from injury.
"I wasn’t expecting to play this well at all," Kyrgios said after the match. "Coming out here and still having that level, it’s amazing. What a way to come back."
