Holger Rune never won a grand slam match before this event and today he stunned last year's finalist Tsitsipas 7-5 3-6 6-3 6-4 to reach the quarterfinal where he will be joined by Casper Ruud.
Holger Rune produced a fabulous effort to down Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets fairly easily. Tsitsipas was not playing a very sharp event having trouble in pretty much every match but this defeat came easier than many thought. The Greek had many issues in this match. He did not serve too well the entire match and he needed to do that to keep himself in it.
Rune had a good plan, he attacked and it worked as he was hitting the ball really cleanly. He attacked early in rallies and he avoided the forehand as a plague. He fed balls to the backhand and it's a weakness Mats Wilander pointed out as well. Rune had more winners in each set and he was hitting the lines consistently. Fans were annoyed by the number of incredible winners Rune hit and it's hard to imagine how Stefanos felt.
The 4th set was especially damning because Rune was hitting everything. He was just too good and Tsitsipa could not do much about it because his serve did not bail him out when he needed to. Joining Rune in the quarterfinal will be Casper Ruud who downed Hubert Hurkacz in four sets. Ruud was very pumped on the court and he celebrated heavily after winning the match.
He was better overall and played better tennis throughout hte match. The final score was 6-2 6-3 3-6 6-3.
