Rafael Nadal surprised many with a sudden retirement hint increasing fans' worries that his foot issues is really a big one.
Rafael Nadal has dropped hints like this before as it's clear that the foot issue is a big one. It's particularly bad during the clay season where the difficulty of playing on the surface makes it worse it seems. Nadal had a negative outlook on the whole thing last year as well but then came back to win the Australian Open. Comments like these are not foreign to Nadal but fans should take them with a grain of salt:
"I know my situation, and I accept it. I can't complain much. I am in
the quarter-finals of
Roland Garros. Two weeks and a half ago, I didn't
know if I would be able to be here. So just enjoying the
fact that I am here for one more year. And being honest, every match
that I play here, I don't know if it's going to be my last match here in
Roland Garros in my tennis career."
He continued:
"That's my situation now. Of course I went through a tough process again with my foot, so I don't know what can happen in the near future with my career."
As noted above, take this with a healthy dose of scepticism because this might be some gamesmanship by Nadal ahead of his clash with Djokovic. Either way, the Spaniard is not yet done and he will give his all against Novak.
