Former World No.1
Novak Djokovic recently announced he would not be competing at next week's
Paris Masters event, causing many to ponder at how this decision would affect his standing on the ATP Rankings table.
The defending champion in Paris, Djokovic previously stated he would tone down his schedule this season as he shifts his focus to chasing Grand Slam titles. Although the Serbian failed to win a Major title this season, he was able to achieve his goal of winning the elusive Olympic gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games.
Djokovic to slide down the rankings table following withdrawal from Paris
After winning the Paris Masters last season and subsequently the
ATP Finals, the Serbian accumulated a massive 2,300 ranking points. However, he stands to lose them all if he skips Paris and fails to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Should the 24-time Grand Slam champion fail to defend all those points, he is likely to fall out of the top 10 heading into the 2025 season. This could see him facing Carlos Alcaraz or defending champion Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of next year's Australian Open. Furthermore, he would likely have to face four consecutive top 10 players should he want to lift the title in Melbourne, a feat that is challenging for any player.
Currently seated at World No.6, Djokovic still has an outside chance to qualify for Turin. Should he decide not to compete, he has stated he would take a break prior to trying to win his 11th Australian Open title in January.
