World no. 1 Novak Djokovic will not defend the title in Madrid next week, deciding to skip the season's third Masters 1000 event and focus on Rome and Roland Garros.
Novak has played only three tournaments in 2021, winning the ninth Australian Open title despite an abdominal injury that forced him to skip the Miami Open. Djokovic returned to action in Monte Carlo, beating Jannik Sinner in the second round before experiencing a tough loss to Daniel Evans in straight sets.
Traveling back home to Serbia, Novak entered the Serbia Open in his hometown of Belgrade, seeking the second title of the season and making a good start against Soonwoo Kwon and Miomir Kecmanovic.
Hoping for more of the same in the semis, Novak had to work much harder against the Australian Open semi-finalist Aslan Karatsev. The Russian lost to Novak in straight sets in Melbourne, and he served revenge in Belgrade, toppling the world's leading player in three sets after almost three and a half hours.
Novak didn't feel well on the court, saying that he might skip Madrid and take some rest. Djokovic will return to action in Rome, and he plans to play Belgrade 2 right ahead of Roland Garros. Novak is a three-time Madrid Open champion, lifting the trophies in 2011, 2016 and 2019, when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
