Not known for holding his tongue, Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has received the backing of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) on his comments regarding the length of the tennis schedule during the season.
The PTPA, founded by Novak Djokovic, has always advocated for the players in terms of prize money and the ability to make a living on the tour, regardless of ranking.
Kyrgios gives player perspective on the length of calendar schedule, PTPA approves
The former World No.13 recently spoke about the brutal nature of the sport, stating it was quite strenuous on player physical and mental health.
"Tennis is crazy like that," he said. "We basically travel to a new country every week. So no off season. You play all year round. Like if a tennis player plays their full schedule, it's like you get maybe a month off at the end of the year to get your body and mind right.
"It's the hardest thing. People don't understand, like you travel to new time zones, new food. Sometimes you're in Asia then Europe it's like crazy. You never have a solid time when you're going to play. A lot of variables to being a good tennis player. Gotta be adaptable for sure."
The PTPA backed Kyrgios' comments, adding their thoughts to the video posted by Kyrgios.
"The professional tennis schedule is unlike anything else in sports. The physical, mental and emotional toll it takes on players only adds to the need for additional player support," they wrote.
10 minute compilation of spectacular points from Nick Kyrgios
Growing up in a household where soccer was king, my earliest memories are filled with chants from packed stadiums and the rhythm of a ball being passed across neighborhood streets. But somewhere along the way, the quiet elegance and raw emotion of tennis pulled me in. What began as a curiosity became a lifelong passion; not just for the sport itself, but for the stories it tells: of grit, of heartbreak, of improbable comebacks and human resilience.
As a tennis writer, I bring the observational lens of someone who didn’t grow up in the sport, but fell in love with it as an outsider; a perspective that lets me see both its technical beauty and its emotional depth. Over the years working with TennisUpToDate, I’ve had the privilege of reaching more than 3.5 million readers worldwide, with one of my features ranking among the site’s top three articles.
With a background in storytelling and a creative mind always searching for meaning beyond the scoreboard, I aim to craft narratives that go deeper than results and rankings. Whether it’s a rising star breaking through or a veteran fighting off Father Time, I try to capture the heartbeat behind the headlines.
