Alexander
Zverev criticized the decision of
Wimbledon organizers to put
Jannik Sinner on
the Centre Court.
The Italian
will play his second-round match against Yosuke Watanuki, and it was scheduled to
take place on the Centre Court, which Zverev expressed his disagreement with
during his press conference.
Due to the
rain delays that have disrupted the Wimbledon schedule in recent days, the
Centre Court has a retractable roof that allows Sinner to play with the
possibility of having the match covered and avoiding match suspensions in the
early rounds of Wimbledon.
"I
don't know whether Jannik has to be put on a court with a roof for a second
round match. There were other names who have achieved more in tennis than
Jannik. I think they had options there," ‘former world No. 2 said.
"I
like Jannik very much - as a person and as a player. He's an incredible player
and will still win a lot. But there were other names in the draw who hadn't
played the first round yet. Like
Matteo Berrettini who was already in the final
here, or me," Zverev added.
'Sascha' has
participated in Wimbledon on five occasions, and it is the Grand Slam where he
has had the least success. His best result at Wimbledon was reaching the
quarterfinals in 2022. In the other Grand Slam tournaments, he has reached the
semifinals at the Australian Open in 2020 and at the French Open in 2021, 2022,
and 2023. He also reached his first and only Grand Slam final so far at the
2020 US Open, where he lost to Dominic Thiem.
Zverev
advanced to the third round of Wimbledon and will face a tough opponent in
Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini caused an upset in this round by defeating the
15th seed, Alex de Minaur.
