Taylor
Fritz became the first American tennis player to reach the quarterfinals in all
three clay Masters 1000 tournaments. The world No. 13 secured a tough victory
against
Grigor Dimitrov (No. 10) by 6-2, 6-7(11), 6-1 and is among the top
eight at the
Rome Open for the first time in his career.
‘Claylor’
has had a great campaign in the clay swing this season. Despite a defeat
in the
Monte-Carlo Masters debut, Fritz reached the final in the Munich Open,
then semifinals in the
Madrid Open, and is now into the last-8 in Rome, with a
record of 10-3 on clay in 2024.
Another great Masters 1000 campaign for Fritz
The American reaches the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 for
the 11th time in his career, and the fourth time in one of the three clay
tournaments, although he had never done so in Rome before. Back in 2022, Fritz
reached the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo, and a year later he reached the
semifinals of the same tournament.
Two weeks ago, Fritz had his best campaign in the Madrid
Open and was eliminated in the semifinals against the eventual champion Andrey
Rublev. Now that he has reached the quarterfinals of the Rome Open, Fritz can
boast of having reached the final stages of all three Masters 1000 on clay,
something no other American player had achieved before.
Although Fritz has stood out more on hardcourts throughout
his career, each season shows improvements on clay. In early April of this
year, he reached the final of the
BMW Munich Open, his first final on clay,
although he fell to the local
Jan-Lennard Struff.
Fritz will challenge Alexander Zverev in his quest to reach his 5th semifinals of Masters 1000.
Fritz's next challenge in Rome will be against world No. 5
Alexander Zverev, who has smoothly progressed throughout the tournament. The
German defeated
Nuno Borges by 6-2, 7-5 and remains without conceding sets.
Sascha leads the head-to-head by 4-3, although they have never faced each other
on clay.
