The semi-finals of the 2023 Rolex Shanghai Masters will take place on Saturday, October 14, at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena. Here is our preview of the day at the ATP 1000 tournament, which will see Sebastian Korda take to the court against Hubert Hurkacz before Grigor Dimitrov faces Andrey Rublev for a place in the final. First up on Stadium Court will be Korda's clash with Hurkacz. The American, seeded twenty-sixth at the tournament, pulled off a shock victory when he defeated second seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round, 7-6 (8), 6-2. He then went on to overcome an incredibly close three-set battle with his compatriot and nineteenth-seed Ben Shelton, during which two sets went to a tiebreak.
Meanwhile, sixteenth seed Hurkacz emerged victorious from his own tight encounter with home player Zhizhen Zhang in the Round of 16, winning the first and third set on a tiebreak. After this, he came back from a set down against World No. 91 Fabian Maroszan, who had made a surprise run to the quarter-final.
Their head-to-head is currently level at 1-1, with Korda having won their most recent meeting at the Australian Open in January of this year. Their match in Melbourne went to five sets, the last of which needed to be decided on a tiebreak. This suggests that their clash in Shanghai could end up being extremely close.
Dimitrov to lock horns with Rublev for seventh time
Next up on Stadium Court, eighteenth seed Dimitrov will face fifth seed Rublev. Both have been playing exceptionally well throughout the tournament so far. The Bulgarian player ousted top seed Carlos Alcaraz for the first time in his career in the Round of 16 before moving past Nicolas Jarry in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Rublev is the only player left in the draw who is yet to drop a set at the tournament, defeating the likes of Adrian Mannarino, Tommy Paul, and Ugo Humbert on his way to the semi-final clash with Dimitrov.
The two players are good friends off the court but have plenty of experience facing each other in important matches, as their head-to-head is currently level at 3-3. Dimitrov won their most recent encounter at the 2022 Vienna Open in straight sets.
