The Quarter-Finals are here at the 2024 Cincinnati Open with the schedule confirmed. Our preview looks ahead to Day Six as we reach the latter stages in Mason, Ohio with the leading contenders now set.
Top seeds Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek remain in the reckoning but it is wide open as such elsewhere in the men's in particular with Carlos Alcaraz falling by the wayside in one of his worst ever performances.
It is a first time meeting to begin the day between the World No.1 and the rising prodigy as Iga Swiatek will face Mirra Andreeva who continues to dazzle and rise the ranks. A scalp against the current WTA Queen would certainly add to her credentials.
A match that is certainly a long time coming and one that we will finally get on Saturday in what is our pick of the day when it comes to a WTA clash. A talent at the top of her game albeit potentially with an Olympic sized hangover after winning a bronze medal. Albeit in heartbreaking circumstances facing a player who won a silver unexpectedly with Diana Shnaider and has been riding the rollercoaster ever since. But who gets off and who stays on it.
After a pretty poor Canada albeit after just winning the Olympic Games, it is very much back to it for Andreeva with the Russian gaining revenge also over Jasmine Paolini after wins for the Italian both at Roland Garros and also the Olympic Games. Swiatek last round made light work of a certain Marta Kostyuk who has been playing well as of late so certainly no easy feat. But one that she achieved 6-2, 6-2. So an intriguing tie there.
Then it is Jannik Sinner who faces Andrey Rublev. It is still hard to gauge the World No.1 plainly due to the fact that he had a walkover against Jordan Thompson and he has recently been struggling with his hip and also illness. He also lost just last week to Andrey Rublev who will look to make it 5-4. The Russian went on to reach the final that week so is it a good omen again? Certainly Sinner's question marks no matter what will continue into the US Open.
Then some more entertainment on Centre Court in two out of the last three men's matches as Alexander Zverev will face hotshot American, Ben Shelton. A match that has never happened thus far so an intriguing proposition. Pablo Carreno Busta is back in business but wasn't enough for Zverev to lose focus. Whilst Shelton easily saw off Fabian Marozsan. Results have been up and down for the American and he will hope to gain the shock win over Zverev to gain even more confidence. An intriguing one for sure.
Despite drama, Jack Draper has been superb.
Despite drama, Jack Draper has been superb.
Whilst Jack Draper won in pretty controversial circumstances against Felix Auger-Aliassime where the umpire stepped in to award him the match in pretty auspicious circumstances. Albeit the Brit was basically over the line anyway, it ended up marring a pretty epic tie. But Draper continues his run and he now faces Holger Rune, the 15th seed for a spot in the semi-finals. In between that clash also is the battle of the resurgent stars as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova faces off against Paula Badosa for a semi-final spot. The latter continuing her great week seeing off Yulia Putintseva.
The Spaniard has been superb without gaining perhaps the result that is landmark yet so can it be this week. But the fun doesn't end there as we look at more ties to watch over the next day.
Over on Grandstand amid a myriad of doubles matches, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula will aim to continue their course towards the semi-finals. Sabalenka faces off against Liudmila Samsonova. Whilst Pegula who has been in some form over the past two weeks takes on Leylah Fernandez.
Fernandez took out Elena Rybakina and followed that up with Diana Shnaider so she is certainly in the habit of dismissing in form or big names. Pegula fits both categories so certainly one on upset watch as Fernandez looks to head into the tournament that made her a global name full of confidence.
Finally we get Hubert Hurkacz taking on Frances Tiafoe in the final Quarter-Final clash. Hurkacz miraculously returned from injury recently when many didn't expect him back until 2025. While Tiafoe has been back on form.
A new coach in David Witt and a new impetus for the American. He has not been in form for some time and seems to be finding something again which is certainly a great sight to see. They face off in the last Quarter-Final.
