The
schedule has been confirmed for Tuesday 30 July at the 2024 Paris
Olympic Games with
Coco Gauff, Nadalcaraz,
Andy Murray in doubles action continues her charge. Our
preview looks ahead to Day Four of action at Roland Garros.
Iga Swiatek, Daniil Medvedev and Jack Draper - Taylor Fritz are also in action as the Last 16 begins at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with the first Quarter-Finals confirmed in the latter stages at Roland Garros.
Swiatek, Medvedev, Gauff-Vekic and Zverev lead Court Philippe-Chatrier
Starting off proceedings, Coco Gauff will continue her slot of early afternoon action when she faces recent Wimbledon semi-finalist, Donna Vekic. The American thrashed Maria Lourdes Carle on Monday 6-1, 6-1 and has often wasted little time in finding her way through. She faces a different task though in Vekic who has been superb as of late. She reached the Wimbledon semi-finals and defeated Bianca Andreescu to move through.
She will also know that a likely tie with her close friend
Maria Sakkari potentially awaits so she will be buoyed by that no doubt and to stop the dominance of Gauff.
Gauff continues her role of kicking off proceedings.
Also on Chatrier is
Alexander Zverev. The reigning gold medalist continues his run and faces off against Tomas Machac who is also making strides in mixed doubles with his girlfriend Katerina Siniakova. He will aim to do the same in men's singles. While Iga Swiatek and Daniil Medvedev conclude proceedings. They face Xiyu Wang and Sebastian Ofner respectively.
Draper-Fritz, Paolini, Nadalcaraz and Murray on Suzanne-Lenglen
But the big matches are perhaps elsewhere. A bonafide match of the round is on Suzanne-Lenglen as Jack Draper faces Taylor Fritz in a British v American battle. Jasmine Paolini faces Anna Karolina Schmiedlova before the two doubles teams of the moment take to the court.
Nadalcaraz return again as
Rafael Nadal and
Carlos Alcaraz face off against Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof. It is a double dose as Andy Murray and Dan Evans face Belgian pairing Gille and Vliegen after their epic win over Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori.
Another Nadalcaraz epic awaits.
Other stories to follow include
Leylah Fernandez taking on
Angelique Kerber. Will the Canadian be the career ender for the German. As well as that we also get Elina Svitolina v Barbora Krejcikova, Camila Osorio faces
Danielle Collins.
Emma Navarro v Qinwen Zheng and Maria Sakkari v Marta Kostyuk are likely the stories of the outside courts as they go back to back. Stan Wawrinka, Lorenzo Musetti and Tommy Paul all also anchor another fantastic day.
Early Years and Initial Inclusion
- 1896 Athens Olympics: Tennis was one of the original sports included in the first modern Olympic Games. Both men's singles and doubles events were featured.
- 1900 Paris Olympics: Women's tennis was introduced, with Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain becoming the first female Olympic champion in history.
Interruption and Absence
- 1924 Paris Olympics: Tennis was featured for the last time before a long hiatus. It was dropped from the Olympic program due to disputes over amateurism rules and other administrative issues.
Reinstatement and Modern Era
- 1988 Seoul Olympics: After a 64-year absence, tennis was reintroduced as a full medal sport. This reinstatement marked the beginning of the modern era of Olympic tennis. Steffi Graf of Germany won the women's singles gold, achieving a "Golden Slam" by winning all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold in the same year.
- 2000 Sydney Olympics: Venus Williams of the United States won both the women's singles and doubles gold medals, with the doubles victory achieved alongside her sister Serena Williams.
Recent Developments
- 2004 Athens to 2016 Rio Olympics: The period saw champions from diverse nations, including Justine Henin (Belgium), Elena Dementieva (Russia), and Andy Murray (Great Britain), who became the first player to win two consecutive singles gold medals (2012 and 2016).
- 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Novak Djokovic, despite being a favorite, was upset in the semi-finals. Alexander Zverev of Germany won the men's singles gold, while Belinda Bencic of Switzerland won the women's singles gold.
Notable Achievements
- Williams Sisters: Serena and Venus Williams have been particularly successful, winning multiple gold medals in both singles and doubles, solidifying their legacy in Olympic tennis history.
- Steffi Graf: Her "Golden Slam" in 1988 remains one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of the sport.
