The 2023 ATP Finals will get underway tomorrow, Sunday, November 12 at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, Italy. However, there will be two new rules implemented at the tournament which have been dividing fans on social media.
The 2023 Nitto ATP Finals will feature the Top 8 players of the season, as World No. 1 Novak Djokovic aims to defend his title from Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Holger Rune.
However, two new rule changes have been put in place at the tournament, dividing fans. Firstly, only eight seconds will be allowed between the first and second serves, whereas normally there is no specified time limit. Secondly, the players will not warm up on the court before the start of the match.

Fans express injury and entertainment concerns

The new rules have led to an outcry from some fans on social media, with one claiming that they "sound like a tik tok video", while another incredulously asked, "Why the hell are they doing this?" Meanwhile, others had a more mixed reaction: "First rule yes. Second rule no. The warm up sets the scene for the match, it builds the anticipation and excitement," wrote one.
Moreover, another fan expressed their worry that the shorter time and lack of a warm-up on court would lead to greater injury: "No warm up and points every 8 seconds... Ready for injury, furthermore in the end of the season. I hope this ideas will never be used on atp tour."
However, others supported the new rules, arguing that it would benefit the tournament: "I like the no on court warm up…get straight to business. Both players have prepared enough beforehand," wrote one, while another added: "Great ideas. Thoroughly agree."
Finally, another wrote that a limit between first and second serves could be a useful addition to the men's game as a whole: "I don’t understand point 2. Point 1 I love. So many times players on first serve will hit a serve. Then spend another 15-20 on their second. Anything to speed up the men’s game I appreciate. Women’s matches I don’t find this necessary. But I know Coco Gauff would love this!!"
