Former world number one
Roger Federer has thrown his name to
become a captain in the
Laver Cup. The 42-year-old is often regarded
as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s singles tennis in the
Open era, having won as many as 20 Grand Slam titles.
Federer was recently quoted in a
report where he expressed interest in becoming the captain of a team in the Laver
Cup. “I could see myself being a captain,” he said.
In the recent past, the likes of
the former world number one Bjorn Borg & John McEnroe have captained the teams
in the competition and it is believed that their time as the leader of their
respective teams is coming to an end.
Federer retired from the sport back
in September 2022 after struggling with fitness concerns for a long period of
time.
The Basel-born, in his illustrious
career, achieved many milestones. He became the first player ever in the men’s
singles category in the Open era to win more than 15 Grand Slams. That’s not it
as he also became the first player ever to win 20 Grand Slams in the men’s singles category.
His most successful
competition was Wimbledon where he ended up lifting the title eight times which
is the most by a player in the competition’s history.
