The coach that oversaw Roger Federer win the first of his record breaking eight Wimbledon titles, Peter Lundgren has passed away at the age of 59.
Lundgren was a successful player. He jumped 234 places in one season to finish World No.31 back in 1985 and then in 1987, he was World No.25 which was his career high. He won a title in Cologne and was dubbed the new Bjorn Borg due to his long hair that bore a resemblance to his compatriot.
But he was often in the shadow of Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg among others. Retiring at just 30 years of age, he moved into coaching. He took Marcelo Rios into the top 10 alerting this in the tennis fraternity to his talents as a coach. He was working with the Swiss Tennis Federation where he stumbled across Roger Federer who he coached to Wimbledon glory in 2003.
He then took Marat Safin to the Australian Open before coaching in a myriad of countries and for a lot of top players. He coached Marcos Baghdatis, Grigor Dimitrov, Stan Wawrinka before then coaching Daniela Hantuchova towards the back end of her career.
His family confirmed the sad news today on Facebook. he has previously battled health issues with his foot having to be amputated a year ago.
“I was going to give an update on my foot," he wrote. Unfortunately, I had to amputate my foot and a bit up 10 days ago and because of the infection I had and my broken ankle did not heal because of my type 2 diabetes you get bad circulation. But now I feel well again and soon my rehab will begin.”
Whilst he was only with Federer in particular fleetingly, he left his mark on his career as Federer went on to win the title a further seven times.
He also as expected became one of the top coaches in the world coaching a lot of top names and even for the British Davis Cup team at some point. A player who perhaps didn't achieve as much due to the other top talents at the time certainly did more than enough to emerge as a coach. A sad loss for tennis.

Roger Federer’s coach when he first won Wimbledon, Peter Lundgren, has died at the age of 59. The Swede also coached Marcelo Rios, Marat Safin, Stan Wawrinka, Marcos Baghdatis, Grigor Dimitrov and Daniela Hantuchová.
