Carlos Alcaraz returned to training this week, but his participation in the Rome Open is still uncertain after suffering an injury that forced him to withdraw from the Madrid Open hours before his debut. The world No. 3 had a small tear in his adductor and is focused on recovering properly for the upcoming challenges.
Alcaraz started the clay swing with the title at the Monte-Carlo Masters and achieved 9 consecutive wins until the final of the Barcelona Open, where he lost the title to Holger Rune. Medical examinations after the tournament showed a minor injury for the Spaniard.
On Monday, he gave good news with his return to the courts in Murcia, looking ahead to the Rome Open, which begins on May 7th. However, according to Marca, the decision has not yet been made on whether Alcaraz will be at the Foro Italico, which will only be decided this weekend when the 4-time Grand Slam champion undergoes a high-intensity training session with points.
Alcaraz could travel to the Italian capital on Tuesday, May 6th, hoping for his debut a couple of days later. However, according to Alcaraz's team, the priority is Roland Garros, and they would be open to the Spaniard missing the Rome Open to ensure he arrives in good physical condition to defend his title at the French Open.
In Monday's training session, Alcaraz was seen with two bandages on the adductor muscles of both legs, although he looked in good physical shape, with two training sessions. According to his physiotherapist Juanjo, Alcaraz is not experiencing physical discomfort at the moment.
The world No. 3 does not defend any points in Rome, as he was absent from the tournament last year. In any case, if he participates, it will be a good opportunity to regain the world No. 2 ranking, considering that Alexander Zverev is defending the title and cannot earn points.
