Former world number one
Serena Williams gave a big compliment
to Italy’s young tennis star
Jannik Sinner after watching him play at the Miami
Open.
The 22-year-old is often regarded as one of the most
highly-rated players currently playing in the men’s singles category alongside
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner lived up to the hype once again as he registered a
thumping win over the current world number four Russia’s
Daniil Medvedev in the
semifinal of the ongoing ATP 1000 event with a score of 6-1, 6-2 on Friday.
Williams, who was watching the match from the stands, came down
to the court to meet Sinner and gave him a big compliment.
“I wish I had my forehand like that. No seriously, the
racquet head, the power. I was like, ‘Wow.’ Night and day, you’re
unbelievable,” the 42-year-old American said.
After the match, Sinner explained the impact of Medvedev on
his career after registering a fifth consecutive win over the Russian tennis star.
“It’s going to be interesting to see now in the future
what’s happening, what’s he’s gonna change, where I have to be very clear with
my mind,” he said.
“But for sure he’s a player who made me a better player,
because, you know, I had to, for example in Beijing, I started to serve and
volley. Then in Vienna I tried to serve and volley but it was not working
again.
“So here I had to be very careful on couple of things, but,
you know, these kind of players, they make you a better player. It sometimes
doesn’t really matter the head-to-head, but it matters how you understand from
your losses and trying to learn.
“That’s what I have been trying in the last years not only
with him but also with other opponents, and this makes me, yeah, a better
player.”
