Jannik Sinner played his best match of the year to defeat Nick Kyrgios in straight sets at the Miami Open securing the quarterfinals 7-6(3) 6-3.
The Italian struggled immensely in the earlier round of the event where he played in the final last year. He barely pulled through in the previous rounds but today's performance was his best of the year. Sinner came out inspired in the match and despite heavy pressure from Kyrgios early on, Sinner was able to hold his serve. It proved quite crucial for the Italian as the Australian became quite frustrated.
Kyrgios complained about the slowness of the courts having played inside the stadium the previous two days where conditions are a bit faster. The crowd didn't like it and umpire Bernardes warned him not to talk too much. Frustration kept boiling up as Kyrgios continued to complain to the umpire that he does not know how to control the crowd.
The tiebreak featured a very frustrated Kyrgios who lost his composure and the tiebreak with 7-3. He got a point penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour after the umpire picked up an exchange about him between Kyrgios and his camp. After the tiebreak concluded Kyrgios demanded an explanation from Bernardes and after not getting one he smashes his racquet getting a game penalty.
The match effectively ended there as Kyrgios tip-toed around a default constantly talking to the crowd and the umpire. Eventually, he calmed down and continue to play but Sinner was in full rhythm and he cruised to a 6-3 finish.
