Top-ranked American
Taylor Fritz believes tennis could attract more eyeballs in the United States, provided one of the homegrown players wins a Grand Slam trophy.
The World No.10 has quite an impressive resume himself, having reached the top 10 and captured an ATP Masters 1000 trophy at Indian Wells last year. Nonetheless, a Major continues to elude him and his compatriots, as former World No.1 Andy Roddick was the last American man to win a Grand Slam, in 2003.
With eight Americans in the top 50, Fritz believes someone is close to achieving this feat. Countryman
Frances Tiafoe came close at last year's US Open, reaching the semifinals. However, Fritz opined that for tennis to attract mainstream attention, an American must actually go the distance and lift the trophy.
"It takes better results from us," said Fritz. "Someone hast to win a Slam to raise more attention to the mainstream media in the US."
The 25-year old is currently competing at the
BMW Munich Open, alongside a host of other Americans as they prepare for Roland Garros.
