Tomas Martin Etcheverry was taken down by
Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Australian Open and agreed with previous sentiments by
Andy Roddick surrounding his idol and how he snatches the game away from his opponents.
Etcheverry lost 3-6, 3-6, 6-7(2), and words from Roddick who took to social media after Djokovic's win over Jenson Brooksby at the 2021 US Open rung true for Etcheverry. Brooksby who has just had his doping ban rescinded won the first set 6-1. However, in the next three sets, he was utterly taken apart.
As Djokovic turned the tables more and more, Roddick said it was basically surgical precision and he takes different parts of your body away as the match goes on.
"First he (Djokovic) takes your legs, then he takes your soul," said Roddick in a now deleted tweet on X.
Despite Roddick since deleting the tweet, Etcheverry spoke in a recent interview echoed those sentiments with his own analogy on facing the 24-time Grand Slam champion. A player that he has charted his rise in comparison with from basically being unranked until now. He said though that it is like facing Rafael Nadal in that it is Djokovic's court and that adds a new level to it being daunting.
"Yes, the phrase is very good and accurate, that first he eats your legs, then he eats your mind or soul, and then he finishes destroying you." the Argentine said in an interview with CLAY Tenis.
"I knew the scenario I was facing. I knew it (Rod Laver Arena) was his court, his tournament. Like facing Rafa at the Phillippe Chatrier,"
