Karolina Pliskova has withdrawn from the #QatarTotalEnergiesOpen semifinals due to a lower back injury. Iga Swiatek advances to the final by walkover and will face the winner of Rybakina vs. Pavlyuchenkova.
After winning the Transylvania Open and playing every day since then, Karolina Pliskova’s run has finally come to an end with the Czech ace withdrawing ahead of the semi-finals this afternoon at the Qatar Open.
Pliskova dumped out Naomi Osaka yesterday after coming from the brink against Anna Kalinskaya and since then riding her luck at times but also getting stronger. But Swiatek is one step closer to retaining her title.
She will now face Anastasia Pavyluchenkova or Elena Rybakina who play still this afternoon, with a landmark tie with the Kazakh potentially on the cards. Swiatek saw off Victoria Azarenka yesterday 6-4, 6-0 to initially book her spot.
She has played nine matches in 10 days and the hope now will be that it’s not an injury and is simply fatigue.
