Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has completed an epic week at the Swiss Indoors in Basel by upsetting Ben Shelton and winning the title 6-4, 7-6(4). He becomes the lowest ranked champion in the event since it joined the tour in 1975.
Mpetshi Perricard who has carved himself out as an ace machine and a terrifying prospect for the future hit 22 in the final. He clinched his maiden ATP 500 title in the process.
After winning his second ATP Tour trophy, Mpetshi Perricard ensured he will move up to a career-high World No.31. The 21-year-old lifted an ATP 250 crown in Lyon earlier this year. He defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime and Holger Rune during his title run.
He hit 109 aces over the course of the week. He only faced three break points in five matches and wasn't broken once during his run. He sealed wins over the aforementioned names as well as Shapovalov and ends his breakout season with a rising ranking that will only get better.
“It’s amazing to win a tournament like that. A 500 for the first time for me,” said Mpetshi Perricard. “I just can be happy with myself, with what I did today and the past five days. It’s amazing to win here… [Before this] it was a tough month for me, but it’s always good when the victories are there.”
