Former American tennis star
John Isner has bid an emotional
farewell from professional tennis.
The 38-year-old announced that he will call it quits
after the ongoing
US Open 2023.
His journey in the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year
came to an end as he lost to fellow American Michael Mmoh in a five-set
thriller during the second-round clash with a score of 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.
While talking to the media after the match, Isner was in tears as he prepared for life beyond tennis.
“Tennis has been a huge part of my life,” he said. “It’s
tough to say goodbye, it is not easy. Eventually this day would come. You can’t
really prepare emotions for it. Most importantly, I have an amazing life for
sure. I look forward to every second of that.”
Isner turned pro 16 years back in 2007 and finished his
career at the highest level winning 16 ATP titles.
However, his record in the major tournaments does not make a
pretty reading as he never managed to play to win a Grand Slam in his career.
His best outing in any big event was playing the Wimbledon
2018 semifinal where he lost to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in a five-set
thriller with a score of 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 26-24.
