Novak Djokovic is set to offer one of the most personal accounts of his career to date with the release of The Wolf in Winter, a documentary for Prime Video, that explores the experiences behind his rise from war-torn Serbia to becoming the most accomplished player in men's tennis history.
Rather than focusing solely on his record-breaking achievements, the project promises to examine the sacrifices, doubts and motivations that have defined Djokovic throughout more than two decades on the professional tour. The 24-time Grand Slam champion said the film will highlight the moments that remained hidden from public view despite his extraordinary success.
The documentary also places Djokovic alongside other leading figures whose careers have recently been adapted for streaming audiences. Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have each been the subject of Netflix productions, while Coco Gauff recently expanded her role beyond competition after being announced as executive producer of two upcoming Tennis Channel documentaries.
Scheduled for release on August 20, the film arrives while Djokovic remains active on tour, offering a retrospective on a career that includes 24 Grand Slam singles titles, an Olympic gold medal, more than 1,100 tour-level victories and a record 428 weeks as world No. 1, while suggesting that his story is still being written.

"The greatest battles were never only on the court"

Directed by Jason Hehir, the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker behind The Last Dance, The Wolf in Winter follows Djokovic through competition, training and family life while revisiting the defining moments that shaped his career. The documentary traces his journey from a childhood marked by war and financial hardship to becoming one of the most successful athletes in sporting history.
Speaking about the project, Djokovic said the documentary was designed to explore the personal experiences that accompanied his success rather than simply recounting titles and records.
"Tennis has given me so much, but the greatest battles were never only on the court,” he said according to Advanced Television. “This documentary is about the moments people didn’t see – the doubts, the sacrifices, and the work of constantly evolving beyond the story so many think they know."

"I’m proud to share this side of my life with my family, my team, my friends, and the fans who have supported me throughout. Amazon and Jason understood that this was never only a story about tennis, but about the people, values, and moments behind it. The journey has been incredible—but the journey is far from over."
Beyond Djokovic himself, the documentary includes interviews with his wife Jelena, members of his family and several prominent figures from tennis, including Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker and Jim Courier. Journalists Mary Carillo, Patrick McEnroe, Howard Bryant, Chris Clarey and Matthew Futterman also contribute to the project.

A look beyond the records

Although Djokovic's achievements have already secured his place among the sport's all-time greats, the documentary appears intent on examining the complexities behind that legacy. It revisits his emergence during an era dominated by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, when he often found himself cast as the outsider attempting to disrupt one of tennis' most celebrated rivalries.
Director Jason Hehir said his interest lay not simply in documenting another successful athlete, but in understanding what continues to motivate someone who has already surpassed virtually every milestone available in the sport. "I’ve always been fascinated by what drives the greatest athletes, and specifically what motivates them once they’ve reached the pinnacle of their sport."

The film also explores the personal circumstances that shaped his development, from growing up in Serbia during the Balkan conflicts to the sacrifices made by his family in supporting his career. "Novak gave us unfettered access to his tireless physical and mental preparation as he competes at the highest level of the sport battling men sometimes half his age."
"In the process, we got to know him as a father, a husband, a friend and a sometimes maddeningly stubborn polarizing cultural figure. He’s a fascinating person, and I’m excited for audiences to see this exploration of a GOAT at the crossroads in the twilight of a brilliant career."
The release reflects a growing appetite for long-form storytelling in tennis, with leading players increasingly using documentaries to offer perspectives beyond competition. In Djokovic's case, however, the timing is distinctive: unlike many retrospective sports documentaries, The Wolf in Winter arrives while he continues to compete at the highest level, leaving the final chapter of his career—and the story itself—still unfinished.
