From riding on the crest of a wave to a title drought, Carlos Alcaraz went from a terrific Wimbledon last year into an American slump and then going round China and Japan chasing points to become World No.1 which failed. But his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero always attempted to keep him grounded to his frustrations.
For Ferrero, he said to Alcaraz simply that the season doesn't end in September and that he still has time to put it right. Albeit he didn't put it right in terms of sealing another title until 2024 when he won Indian Wells. But still very much a coach trying to put a positive spin on his charge not performing to his terrific best. He opened up on Ferrero's mindset that he attempts to instill in him during an interview with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
"Well, that last part of the season was difficult for me. After the American tour I needed to maintain my enthusiasm. Ferrero came to tell me that the season does not end in September. For things like that I have him by my side: he doesn't laugh at me thanking him, but rather he tells me what he should tell me," he told La Vanguardia.
