Former ATP players
Sam Querrey,
John Isner,
Jack Sock and
Steve Johnson took a nostalgic detour on the latest episode of the
Nothing Major podcast, opening up about the players they wish theyâd been real friends with during their careers. Though they all interacted casually on tour â âyouâd say hi, youâd practice,â as Querrey put it â they admitted that some players remained at a friendly distance. This new segment, described jokingly as another âSam Querrey brainchild,â quickly turned into a humorous and revealing look at the personalities they admired most.
The first name that sparked excitement was BenoĂŽt Paire. John Isner didnât hesitate: âI have a couple, so Iâll name one: BenoĂŽt Paire.â He explained that while they were always friendly, it never extended beyond tournaments: âAlways had great rapport at the tournaments⌠but never really hung out with him outside of a tournament. Iâd like to go to dinner with him, wearing a scarf all year round.â Sock immediately jumped in: âYeah, Iâm with you on that one, John. One hundred percent,â even revealing he had played âFIFA many times outside of events with BenoĂŽt.â
Jack Sock then turned to a legendary character: former world No. 1 Marat Safin. âI was going to go with Safin, just to kind of experience what the Safin life was like,â he said. He admitted he wouldnât want to join in all the activities the Russian was famous for, joking, âI donât know if Iâd want to be super involved in all of those, but just to hear what he says and the way he goes about things⌠dinner would be funny.â Meanwhile, Steve Johnson opted for former top-10 Juan âPicoâ MĂłnaco, saying heâd be âso much fun to go out with, have dinner with. High energy, always has a good time.â Isner confirmed it: âIâve gone to dinner, hung out with Pico plenty of times. Iâve converted him â heâs a massive Carolina Panthers fan because of me.â
Querrey wrapped up the retired-player section with a name everyone expected: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. âJust so cool. Friendly guy,â he said, recalling their brief exchanges at Roland-Garros: âAlways a âhiâ, but⌠I wouldâve loved to strengthen that friendship a little more. Super sweetheart of a guy.â
Current stars theyâd love to befriend
When the group switched to active players, Querrey surprised the others by picking TomĂĄs Etcheverry. âHeâs smooth. Have you ever said hi to him? Super smooth,â he said, adding that Etcheverry âshouldâve made the Hawkeye draw⌠heâs got the it factor.â Querrey even joked that maybe the Argentine would hear the episode: âMaybe he listens to the pod and sparks a friendship. Slide in the DMs.â
Jack Sock kept his choice simple: Carlos Alcaraz â but because of golf. âIâd want to just go golf with him⌠heâs addicted to it.â Querrey then revealed he feels closer to Alcaraz than people might think thanks to his media role: âI feel like Iâm getting kind of close with Alcaraz, based on all the time spent on the desk. Iâm not far off from getting an invite out to dinner with the Alcaraz crew.â He even set a personal goal: â2026 goals â have one dinner with Carlos Alcaraz. Outside a tennis venue.â
Steve Johnson took a more niche path, confessing heâd always been jealous watching the Spanish players â especially Rafael Nadal and Marc LĂłpez â play their mysterious board game at Roland-Garros. âI really wanted to learn it and sit at that table,â he said. âNo idea how it works, but itâd be a fun hang.â Yet he eventually returned to the same wish as the others: âUltimately Iâd like to play golf with Carlos.â
New Faces, Honorable Mentions and Quiet Jealousies
Querrey added another name before finishing the segment: âGive me Cobolli â new guy. Flavio Cobolli seems cool.â The group then turned to the social tension players sometimes feel when wanting to befriend someone. Querrey admitted: âThere were times I remember thinking, âOh man, Iâd love toâŚâ I was always a little jealous â like Stevie and Casper Ruud. You guys are friends, you golf. Iâve always been a little jealous of that.â
Medvedev closed the list with a unanimous honorable mention. âHonorable mention Medvedev,â Jack said, with both Isner and Querrey immediately agreeing. Querrey ended with a hopeful line: âWho knows? Maybe all the players we mentioned listen to the pod⌠maybe theyâll reach out.â
