Andy Murray made a winning start at the Nottingham Open on the day of the city was rocked with a terrible tragedy that saw multiple people dead and several injured.
It happened in the early morning hours of Tuesday when a lone attacker murdered a few people in the city centre of Nottingham. Both the ATP and WTA have tennis events in the city at the time and Andy Murray was certainly shocked by the news when he woke up. Even more so since he is staying in the city centre:
"It was obviously shocking when I woke up this morning. When I was going down to breakfast a few messages on our team chat came up. We are staying in the city centre and had been out for dinner last night and walking around those areas. You never expect something like that to happen."

Shocking

The event debated whether to continue with play or not but ultimately they settled that it was safe to continue as the suspect was arrested by the time the tennis was starting. Murray himself played yesterday and won his match comfortably but it was still shocking for him to see the situation happen.
He also confirmed that the event did debate about calling it off:
"Really shocking and obviously heartbreaking for the victims and the people involved. We were talking about it this morning, saying that we didn't know if the tournament was going to be suspended for the day because there are way more important things than a tennis event."
The win itself was a major one for the Brit as he's working his way to hopefully become a seed at Wimbledon though he will need a couple of more wins to get there. He will play at the Cinch Championships next week as well.
