Nick Kyrgios made a remarkable comeback to tennis last year but there were many things that happened before which ultimately lead him back to the sport.
Kyrgios has always been a very good tennis player but there were a lot of things that impacted his career. From his own lack of serious commitment to it to some personal problems, there was always something going on with the Australian. In the latest episode of Break Point, Kyrgios addressed some of those private problems including an episode that warranted a visit to a hospital in London in 2019. It was the darkest time of his life.
Contemplating suicide
In the episode, Kyrgios talked about his 2019 WImbledon experience that saw him contemplate suicide:
"I was genuinely contemplating if I wanted to commit suicide. I
lost at Wimbledon. I woke up and my dad was sitting on the bed,
full-blown crying. That was the big wake-up call for me. I was like,
'OK, I can't keep doing this'. I ended up in a psych ward in London to figure out my problems."
It's not the first time Kyrgios addressed his mental health issues as he talked about them last year before even admitting to self-harm:
"If you look closely, on my right arm you can see my self-harm. I was having suicidal thoughts and was literally struggling to get out of bed, let alone play in front of millions."
It was a very dark time for Kyrgios who said of the time:
"I was drinking, abusing drugs, lost my relationship with my family, pushed all my close friends away."
He has since completely turned his life around and his career making the Wimbledon final last year. He's missed most of this year but made a comeback in Stuttgart recently with Wimbledon only weeks away as well.
