Alexander Zverev believes there is a group of players ready to dethrone Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer from the top of men's tennis.
For a very long time, men's tennis has been dominated by the so-called big three.
Novak Djokovic,
Rafael Nadal, and
Roger Federer have been on the top of men's tennis for a very long time. They are still there although most of that damage is being dealt by Novak Djokovic who is the strongest of them at the moment. Alexander Zverev believes that it's time for a group of younger players to take over.
Speaking on that, he said:
“For a long time, I was labeled as the only young capable of concerning the Big Three in Grand Slams. Today
there are also Medvedev and Tsitsipas. It helps me a lot. I wouldn't
say it takes the pressure off me, but it's clear that there is now a
group of young players threatening the Big Three in Grand Slams. We all
want to be better."
Two players in recent years have been able to snatch a grand slam trophy from the big three. It was Dominic Thiem at the US Open last year when he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final. The other one was Daniil Medvedev who also won the US Open recently over Novak Djokovic. Several players played finals in the past year or two as well but they failed to win it.
Whether the younger players are truly ready to take over will be determined in 2022 but Zverev believes they can. The German will hope to win his maiden one as well after he was able to take down Novak Djokovic at the Olympic Games this year.
