Austrian Dominic Thiem survived a scare on Thursday at the 2020 Rio Open.
The top seed rallied from a set down to battle past Spain's Jaume Munar 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4, securing his place in Friday's quarterfinals. Thiem improved to 3-0 in career meetings against the Spaniard, as he attempts to win his first title this season.
The
Australian Open runner-up faces Italian qualifier Gianluca Mager, who defeated Portugal's Joao Domingues 6-3 7-6(5). Mager was only able to convert 3 of 10 break points in the entire match. However, he was aided by his opponent, who wasted a set point in the second set. This will be the first ATP Tour quarterfinal of Mager's career, as the 25-year old is more prominent on the Challenger's circuit.
Lorenzo Sonego scored the upset of the tournament, overcoming second seed
Dusan Lajovic 7-6(5) 7-6(5). The Italian in fact trailed by a break in both sets. Sonego required two hours and 10 minutes to advance to his first quarterfinal of the season.
Sonego will meet fifth-seed Croatian Borna Coric, who prevailed 6-3 1-6 7-6(5) against Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild. Coric saved nine break points in this two hour encounter, as the home crowd was unable to spur their man through to the next round.
