Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the semi-finals of the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Los Cabos despite a strong fighting performance. Zverev lost to
Jordan Thompson 5-7, 6-4, 6-7
What a match between Alexander Zverev and Jordan Thompson! The German number one and his Australian opponent battled for more than three hours for the second place in the final in Los Cabos, before a tie-break had to decide the outcome of the match. Because Alexander Zverev was able to fend off an ace at 5:6 and 30:40 in the third set. And Thompson missed his second chance himself with a forehand ball into the side out. Zverev saved match point number three again with a strong serve through the middle.
And so it continued: Zverev missed a game point to make it 6:6, Thompson another match point. And another. By the time the short decider began, 1:21 hours had already been played in the third set alone. The grand final began with three mini-breaks, then Thompson had a bit of luck on his side on a few balls. The sides were changed at 5:1. And one forehand error from Zverev later, Thompson had the next five match points. And after a total playing time of 3:40 hours, Jordan Thompson was able to celebrate reaching the final in Los Cabos.
The top seed from Hamburg threw his racket in the duel, which began in the evening and did not end until well after midnight. In the deciding set, the 26-year-old fended off five match points at 5:6 and saved himself in the tie-break - in which the Australian Open semi-finalist had no chance.
