After a substandard start to the 2019 season, Rafael Nadal was looking to win his first title of the year as he competed at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome.
The Spaniard had reached the Australian Open final, but was defeated decisively by Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Following three consecutive semifinal showings on clay, the Mallorcan finally had a chance for redemption as he reached the final in Rome. His opponent that day, Novak Djokovic; in a rematch from their one-sided Australian Open final earlier that year.
The final saw Nadal dominate the first set, as the defending champion gave Djokovic little room to operate with his aggressive play and stellar defense. Despite the Serbian's best efforts, he failed to win a game in the first set, losing it 0-6 to the surprise of everyone present.
However, Djokovic showed the grit and mental strength that differentiates him from his peers. He fought back to take the second set 6-4, but was unable to overcome the relentless attack from his Spanish opponent. Nadal dominated the final set, winning the match 6-0 4-6 6-1 to win his first title of the year and ninth career Rome trophy.
