Professional tennis is brimming with numerous rivalries, but few were as fierce as that between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.
With both men hailing from the United States, it could be assumed that some sort of camaraderie existed between them. However, this was far from the truth as each not only tried to outdo the other professionally, but both men seemed to dislike each other on a personal basis.
The duo faced each other numerous times on the ATP circuit, trading wins and barbs in the process.
Entering the 1995 season, Sampras was in a battle with Agassi for the World No.1 ranking. He fell to Agassi in the Australian Open final but avenged this loss by defeating his compatriot in the Indian Wells final.
With Sampras and Agassi ranked No.1 and No.2 respectively, it was only appropriate that both should meet in the final at the
Miami Open.
Each man had little difficulty on their journey the final. Agassi was particularly impressive, dropping only one set en route to a showdown with Sampras.
With Sampras being the two-time defending champion, he knew he had to win to retain his World No.1 ranking. A victory for Agassi would see the American rise to the top position for the first time in his career.
The match became an instant classic, filled with exceptional shot-making and amazing baseline rallies. Agassi rallied from a set down to prevail 3-6 6-2 7-6(3), supplanting Sampras as the new top dog in tennis.
