Fifth seed
Denis Shapovalov suffered an early round loss at the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup) on Wednesday, as the Canadian was ousted by close friend
Frances Tiafoe in straight sets.
Playing in front of a supportive home crowd, Shapovalov was unable to develop a rhythm as Tiafoe's consistency was too much to overcome. The American cruised to a 6-1 6-4 victory, with Shapovalov struggling to hold serve during the match.
Tiafoe served exceptionally well, winning points on 23 of 26 first serves. Furthermore, the World No.52 never faced a break point during the 75 minute encounter. Conversely, Shapovalov was plagued with errors, hitting nine double faults and winning only 35% of points on his second serve. The World No.10 was forced to save 10 of 13 break points, but it was not enough to stop his American opponent from running away with the match.
Tiafoe will face the winner between 11th seed
Gael Monfils and Australian
John Millman, as both men battle in the final match of the night.
