Stefanos Tsitsipas got his 2nd win over Medvedev in 8 matches to advance to the
Roland Garros semifinals.
The Greek played a great match to defeat a player with whom he struggled in the past 6-3 7-6(3) 7-5. Heading into this match Tsitsipas was considered the favourite but his struggles with Medvedev had many wondering what would happen in the match. The damper conditions in the night match favoured him as well and it showed.
The Greek moved well in the match and attacked Medvedev with his forehand. The Russian could not keep the points on the shorter side and he was often forced into positions where he committed errors. On the other hand, Tsitsipas had more winners than errors and it proved enough to win it 6-3.
Medvedev played a better 2nd as he played much better on return. In the first, he only won 4 points on return but here he was able to break the Greek once. That break gave him a chance to contest the set in the tiebreak but Tsitsipas won it 7-3. Medvedev had two SP in the game before the tiebreak but failure to convert them negatively impacted his confidence.
In the 3rd set Medvedev fended off some early break points and even took a 4-2 lead. It seemed like the Russian finally found a way but Tsitsipas went on a 3-0 run to make it 5-4. The key moment came at 6-5 for Tsitsipas when Medvedev served. He had 40-0 but allowed a MP which the Greek took to close it out after 2 hours and 21 minutes.
