Tsitsipas has played inconsistent tennis since his French Open final loss and that continued in Tokyo as well. The Greek player secured two victories at the Olympic Games until today but neither was impressive. Today he played well in the first set dominating Humbert from the baseline.
He won the opening set 6-2 and it seemed like he was finally finding some of the form he had on clay this season that propelled him into his first Grand Slam final. But the result had most to do with what Humbert did not do. The Frenchman was shaky and his serve could not bail him out.
That changed in the 2nd set when the Frenchman finally settled and reduced the number of cheap errors. He applied pressure on Tsitsipas more and more but the Greek was able to withstand it. He completely fell apart in the tiebreak losing it 3-7 due to a lot of bad mistakes of which he had many in the 2nd set (16).
The 3rd was a clear indication that Tsitsipas is struggling with his confidence as he completely lost in the final set. He was not aided by a leg issue that bothered him as well. His serve was not working, his baseline game was not working and once again there were too many mistakes. Humbert took a double lead 5-1 before closing out the match with 6-2.
