Stefanos Tsitsipas almost completed the comeback against
Novak Djokovic but the Serbian played his best tennis yet in the final set which he won with 6-1.
The second
Roland Garros semifinal delivered much more excitement than the first on as Novak Djokovic was leading 2-0 before Tsitsipas made it 2-2 and the Serbian responded furiously in the 5th with a 6-1 victory. After the match the Greek was impressed by Djokovic saying:
“For sure he has almost reached perfection, Novak, in his game style, the way he plays, which is unbelievable to see, honestly. That inspires me a lot to go out and work and try to reach that perfection, that ability to have everything on the court.”
This was not the first time Tsitsipas almost beat Djokovic and he was close this time as well but ultimately he fell short when it mattered the most. After the match he summarised his emotions:
“I feel happy and at the same time sad. Could have been a better result for me today. Novak showed once again what an incredible athlete [he is] and his ability on the courts. [It] was difficult, for sure, playing him. I think [he is] one of the most difficult opponents I've faced in my entire life. I have huge respect for that. He gave me a really difficult time on the court."
He ended the interview by giving credit to his surroundings including his team. He vowed to come back stronger and better citing his maturity which has improved dramatically in the past year. We wish him all the best going forward.
