After
losing in the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open to Milos Raonic, Stefanos Tsitsipas showed that he is ready to go deep at the 2020
US Open.
Denis Shapovalov and
Hubert Hurkacz also showed quality tennis to advance to the second round in Flushing Meadows.
The young Canadian was the first to step on the court on Monday from the trio. Shapovalov faced Sebastian Korda in his opening match and showed a very solid performance. He kept a very strong first service when he has won 82% of the points after his first serve. On the other hand, his opponent had only 2 breakpoints but converted one which later led him to the second set victory. However, he was not able to do more in the match as Shapovalov triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 after 2 hours and 46 minutes.
'The Greek God', as he was called during the
Ultimate Tennis Showdown, played against world no. 41, Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round. Tsitsipas was dominant from the start to finish when he dropped only 4 games during the match.
The fourth-seeded in Flushing Meadows won 90% of the points on his first serve and converted 7 out of 14 break points he had. This led him to a quick 100-minute victory 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.
The 24th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz also enjoyed a three-set victory in the first round of the US Open. The Polish player maintained a high-level of play during all three sets to defeat Peter Gojowczyk 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
