Two-time Roland Garros finalist Dominic Thiem is in the main draw of the event following Nadal's withdrawal as he avoids having to play qualifiers in times of struggle
Dominic Thiem had a very clear goal of playing at Roland Garros however for a good amount of time it seemed like he would need to play the qualifiers in order to do it. That's not the case anymore as the Austrian moves into the main draw field following Nadal's withdrawal from the event earlier today.
Nadal and Thiem contested two Roland Garros finals in their careers with Nadal winning both relatively easily. Now his withdrawal has given Thiem a chance to avoid having to play in the qualifiers where he would have a tough time considering his recent struggles. There is a very good chance he might have missed the event altogether had he entered the qualifiers.
