Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev is now set to overtake Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the top-five of the ATP rankings.
The Russian tennis star has been in the news for the wrong reasons as he was disqualified from the Dubai Duty-Free Championship by the chair umpire in the semifinal of the competition for allegedly insulting a young line judge in the third and final set of the clash against the Alexander Bublik.
The development did not only hurt Rublev’s chances on the court but it will also have an impact on his position in the ATP rankings.
According to the latest report, Zverev is now set to overtake the 26-year-old and is now set to become the new world number five in updated ATP rankings. Interestingly, this will happen exactly after two years since Zverev was disqualified from an event for a similar kind of offence.
The Hamburg-born has had a more than decent beginning to his 2024 season. He had a good outing in the first Grand Slam of the year — the Australian Open — where his journey finally came to an end after losing in the semifinal to the current world number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller with a score of 5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3.
After that, Zverev also played in the semifinal of the Los Cabos Open where he once again faltered in the semifinal of the competition, this time to Australia’s Jordan Thompson with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-6.
