Alcaraz returns.
Carlos Alcaraz showed that he was not just a winner on Rod Laver Arena today in a straight sets victory over Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, but that he has great sportsmanship after he took the blame for a time violation committed by his opponent.
The event occurred at a very crucial point in the match, with Alcaraz having just made the score 6-5 in his favour, with de Minaur serving to force a tiebreak. He needed to be at full focus to get the better of the world number one, with procedures not starting in a good manner.
"Time violation warning: de Minaur," said the Eva Asderaki, the Umpire, who had been closely watching the serve clock tick down to zero. A bemused de Minaur stared confusingly towards her direction, with the camera cutting back to him with a shocked smile on his face, in utter disbelief that he got a warning.
He was not the only one, with the crowd, passionately supporting their number one Aussie on, booing towards Asderaki who looked to stay true with her decision.
The events would soon be cleared up by Alcaraz, who confirmed why de Minaur was unable to get the serve away before the clock reached zero. "I wasn't ready, I wasn't there," he told Asderaki, trying to persuade her to overturn the time violation.
De Minaur went up to the chair to state his case, while Alcaraz also had a discussion with her. "Oh, you called it? I wasn't ready." He walked back to the baseline with a respectfully applause and cheer going around the arena towards the Spaniard for his class and sportsmanship, which is a common thing to see from the 22-year-old.
The time violation warning was rescinded thanks to this, but de Minaur was not able to produce the goods afterwards. Alcaraz won the next three points to set up a trio of set points. The world number six saved all of them before offering him another chance. This time, Alcaraz did not mess up and took a one-set lead. From here on, the six-time Grand Slam champion went up another level, dropping just three more games against a hapless de Minaur.
It is set to be a first Australian Open semi-final for Alcaraz, who continues to hunt down the coveted career Grand Slam. He will take on Alexander Zverev in the semi-final.
