Tempers flared at the
Monte-Carlo Masters via a furious
Flavio Cobolli. Enroute to a surprising 6-3, 6-3 defeat at the hands of qualifier
Alexander Blockx, he let his raw emotions out at the umpire after a damaging defeat.
The Italian saw an opportunity to gain some points on his ranking ahead of a busy clay swing. He was a strong favourite against the Belgian qualifier. The 10th seed had found some form at the Mexican Open, storming to the title before descending back into mediocrity after a sluggish Sunshine swing.
Cobolli was looking forward to a period on clay. It is an important period for him, as he made a name for himself last year by winning the Tiriac Open and the Hamburg Open. His form on the big stage, however, was disappointing.
He would be hoping to turn that form around, first at the
Monte-Carlo Masters. However, his progress has been stunted by an impressive Blockx who caused a huge upset to get the better of a flustered Cobolli. He is yet to make it past the second round in Monaco in his three appearances in the tournament with a huge opportunity missed for more progress and points on the board.
Cobolli loses his temper with angry outburst at umpire
It was a second matchup against a qualifier for Cobolli after taking down Francesco Comesana in three sets. It did not start well against his 21-year-old opponent. Blockx stole a march with an early break of serve to move 2-1 in front before saving a brace of break points to sail into a 3-1 advantage. Cobolli continued to pressure the serve, squandering three more opportunities to get over the line before Blockx sealed his fate with another break of serve right at the end of the set.
Blockx's serve was a lot more sturdy in the second set, compounded by just a single break of serve that saw him stamp his authority on this tie. He got the job done with his third match point, sparking triumphant scenes for Blockx. It is the first time he has reached the third round in a Masters 1000 tournament, and he will test his luck against the number fifth seed Alex de Minaur for a spot in the quarterfinals.
For Cobolli, he was livid. After losing the match, he lashed out at the umpire in an
explicit outburst segment of words while walking to the net, sharing his anger and frustration with the job he had done. He briefly calmed down to sportingly offer his opponent his flowers before pausing right in front of the chair, sharing a few more chosen words before walking off without shaking their hand.
“You don’t do anything. Everyone is shouting, and you don’t do anything," Cobolli yelled out. He was visibly agitated by the crowd, who had a tendency to make more noise than at other tournaments. He was unable to cope with it and blamed the umpire, who seemingly did not do enough to quiet the audience.
Cobolli will look to recover from this frustration with a deep run at the BMW Munich Open, set to commence from April 13.
