Moise Kouame produced one of the most unusual viral moments of
Roland Garros on Thursday after a brutal second-round victory played in extreme heat conditions in Paris.
The 17-year-old French player spent nearly five hours on court before overcoming Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in a five-set battle lasting 4 hours and 56 minutes. The match, played under temperatures exceeding 30 degrees, tested endurance levels across both players in one of the most physically demanding environments of the tournament so far.
Conditions at
Roland Garros have become a recurring talking point during the early stages of the 2026 edition, with multiple players visibly struggling in the heat. The surprise defeat of Jannik Sinner also dominated headlines on Thursday, although several other players were similarly affected by the difficult Paris conditions.
Kouame’s match was no exception, as long rallies and extended sets pushed both players into a survival scenario rather than a conventional tactical contest. The French teenager eventually emerged victorious, securing a hard-fought win in front of the home crowd by 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(10-8).
Viral recovery moment after five-hour battle
After completing the match, Kouame immediately sought relief from the heat, producing an unexpected scene that quickly circulated on social media. Instead of a traditional ice bath or towel-down routine, the teenager opted for a far more unconventional solution.
In a widely shared moment, Kouame placed his head inside a portable courtside fridge in an attempt to cool down after the exhausting encounter. The spontaneous reaction reflected the extreme physical strain imposed by conditions in Paris on Thursday.
The image quickly gained traction due to its surreal nature, capturing the reality of competing in Grand Slam conditions during a heatwave. The moment underlined just how demanding
Roland Garros can become when matches extend deep into the afternoon heat, particularly for younger players still adapting to five-set physical loads.
Draw opens up amid wave of upsets
Meanwhile, the top half of the draw has been shaped by several unexpected results, with Jannik Sinner’s elimination standing out as the headline shock of the day. Other notable exits, including Ben Shelton, Luciano Darderi, and Valentin Vacherot, have further reshaped the competitive landscape in Paris.
With Carlos Alcaraz also absent from the tournament, the section now appears unusually open, with multiple players sensing an opportunity to make a deep run in this edition of Roland Garros.
Kouame will face Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the third round, after the Chilean advanced without playing due to a last-minute withdrawal from 16th seed Valentin Vacherot. The French teenager will aim to continue his breakthrough run and reach the fourth round in what is his first main-draw appearance at Roland Garros.
