The 24-time Grnad slma champion Novak Djokvic attended the Davis Cup tie between Greece and Brazil in Athens as a spectator. This comes shortly after his decision to move his residence to the Greek capital.
The former world No. 1 was a high-profile spectator for one of the most exciting matches of the weekend: Stefanos Tsitsipas against Joao Fonseca, with both players looking to secure a spot for their country in the Finals.
Djokovic was confirmed to participate in the Serbia vs. Turkey series this weekend, but he ultimately chose to take a break after his US Open campaign. His teammates, Miomir Kecmanovic and Hamad Medjedovic, were the protagonists in the victory against the Turks (3-1), guaranteeing Serbia's place in the 2026 qualifiers, where Djokovic could presumably return to represent his country.

Djokovic moves to Athens amid tensions in Serbia

According to Serbian media reports, tensions with the local government led the tennis player to decide to leave Belgrade and move with his family to Athens, specifically to the residential area of Glyfada. The conflict between Djokovic and Serbian authorities escalated after President Aleksandar Vučić publicly criticized the athlete for supporting protests that demand early elections and justice for victims.
It has been reported that Djokovic has already enrolled his two older children, Stefan and Tara, in an exclusive school in the Greek capital. He has also trained with his eldest son at the Kavouri tennis club in the city. Furthermore, last August he met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to apply for a Golden Visa, which is granted to people who make significant investments in the country.
Djokovic's change of residence from Belgrade to Athens also had a repercussion in the sports world, as the ATP 250 Belgrade Open, owned by the Djokovic family, was moved to Athens for this edition. This marks the return of an ATP-level tournament to Greece after 30 years.

Davis Cup: Brazil and Greece battle for a spot

The first day of the tie between the European and South American teams saw both Tsitsipas and Fonseca secure wins for their countries. In the first match, the 18-year-old Brazilian star overcame Greek player Stefanos Sakellaridis 7-5, 6-3, giving the first point to the Brazilians. In the second match of the day, the former world No. 3 Tsitsipas had no trouble defeating Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-2, 6-1, tying the series for a spot in the 2026 qualifiers.
On the second day, the Brazilians were favorites with their specialist doubles team of Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo against Petros Tsitsipas and Aristotelis Thanos. The South Americans had no issues and put their country ahead with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory, leaving Fonseca with the responsibility of securing the win in the fourth match against none other than Tsitsipas.
Just before the match between Tsitsipas and Fonseca, the luxury spectator was Djokovic, who was captured by cameras watching the match between his colleagues from the stands, alongside his son Stefan. He was acclaimed by the local crowd, who gave a standing ovation to the 38-year-old star, a new resident of Athens.
