Stan Wawrinka is currently on his farewell tour of tennis, competing in all the events for the final time, He put up a brave showing in the
Australian Open, coming through two titanic battles before running out of steam against Taylor Fritz. Instead of walking off in misery, he stayed to thank the crowd and soak up the atmosphere and did this with a beer as he said goodbye to the major event.
The three-time Grand Slam winner had already got past Laslo Djere before taking down Arthur Gea in a final set tiebreak after playing for over four and a half hours. This shows the incredible longevity the 40-year-old still possesses, and that the quality never left from his prime when he was challenging the best players in the world.
His third round tie was always a tall order, with the former US Open finalist Fritz proving to be a step too far, winning in four sets despite a very good effort by
Wawrinka to keep on pace with the world number nine.
After the match, he was doing a post-match interview Craig Tiley when he made a lovely gesture as he offered to share a beer with the CEO of Tennis Australia. "I would like to share a beer with Craig," he stated before running off to his chair and pulling out a couple of cans, ice cold after being stored in his freezer.
He ran back to Tiley while the crowd started cheering, passionately urging them to share this special moment. They opened it at the same time before Wawrinka lifted his can to the John Cain Arena and said one final message: "Cheers everybody and thank you so much." He then took a sip of the beveridge, enjoying his final moments at Melbourne Park.
The 2014 champion was a very popular person on court, and will continued to be lauded long into the season as he continues to say goodbye to the biggest and most iconic tournaments, many of which he has won. His
Australian Open story has come to an end, but he has ended with a nice moment shared with passionate fans cheering his name.
