Hugo Gaston becomes first Roland Garros WC to reach the 4th round after sensational victory over Wawrinka as Sinner moves past Coria.
When Hugo Gaston received the Roland Garros Wild Card not many expected him to go far let alone defeat a former Roland Garros champion in
Stan Wawrinka en route to that historic finish. But that is exactly what happened on Friday evening when the final out was called. At the start, it looked like Wawrinka would cruise past Gaston easily as the Swiss won the first set 6-2.
However, the French player came back in a very interesting fashion. He won the 2nd set 6-3 with just timely and smart play. He didn't dominate on the court, he wasn't too aggressive, he didn't serve particularly well but he won key points and he held his serve. Wawrinka tried to attack him but he ultimately fired off 12 unforced errors that doomed him.
The 3rd set was a similar set in that Wawrinka played even more aggressively and he hit more winners with more errors as well. To combat that Gaston played more aggressively as well but he balanced his winners and errors in a better manner and it worked. He won the set 6-3.
The 4th one was won by Wawrinka with brilliant play overall. He continued his aggressive play trying to shorten the play and it worked. He hit winners when it mattered the most and broke Gaston three times and each one mattered as he tightly won the set 6-4. But all of that didn't matter much in the final one as he completely crumbled and allowed Gaston to fly all over the court. The Frenchman won it 6-0 probably because of exhaustion by Stan which was visible towards the end of the match.
Jannik Sinner is also through to the 4th round as well after a great showing against Federico Coria. The end result was 6-3 7-5 7-5 and the Italian is enjoying his best ever appeareance at the Roland Garros and it's a great tease of things to come. How far can he go should be interesting to see.
