John
McEnroe's comment about
Nicolas Jarry sparked fans' displeasure.
The 7-time
Grand Slam champion made the comment during the BBC broadcast of the match
between
Carlos Alcaraz and world No. 28 Nicolas Jarry in the third round of
Wimbledon. In a highly intense duel, the Chilean displayed a great performance,
pushing the world No. 1 to the limit before ultimately losing 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-3,
7-5.
McEnroe's
remark about not knowing Jarry gained attention on social media and caused
frustration for Australian tennis player
John Millman.
“How a
commentator can say 'we don’t know Jarry but we’ll get to know him' is beyond ridiculous.
87 million people play tennis worldwide and this guy is the 28th best at it
currently. #Wimbledon,” Millman wrote on Twitter.
“It could
be any number of the BBC team.... McEnroe, Castle, Inverdale, Lloyd..... they
only know players in the 70s,80s and Djokovic, Federer & Nadal”
“McEnroe
says this all the time. It’s amazing, it’s disrespectful, and it shows McEnroe
does not do his job. Anyone can go on YouTube and watch vids, learn Jarry's
game, and come prepared to commentate,”
“How
someone considered a “top” commentator can broadcast there lack of knowledge in
their field and say it with confidence
on air is wild. Jarry has definitely done some damage this year alone to be on
a tennis fans radar. We need change in
the 🎙️booths,”
“Nicolas
Jarry, a really nice guy, a gentleman. A young guy who belongs to the upper
Chilean class. Most of these Chilean
rich guys are really nice, well mannered, without hate in their hearts. He is
number 27 in World Ranking. His grandfather was a tennis player in Davis Cup,”
Jarry’s 2023
Nicolas Jarry has two
titles this year: Santiago Open and Geneva Open. The Chilean defeated
Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Halle Open two weeks ago, where he reached the
quarterfinals. He also reached the fourth round of the 2023 French Open, losing
to Casper Ruud but defeating the 16th seed Tommy Paul along the way.
The 27-year-old player
has recorded victories this year against players such as Tsitsipas, Paul, Ruud,
Zverev, Dimitrov, Coric, and Musetti. He has secured a new career-high ranking
of world No. 26 and is currently 19th in the race to the ATP Finals, which
considers rankings based solely on this year's performances.
