Thiago
Seyboth Wild is embroiled in controversy due to messages expressing his pride
in having Nazi roots.
The
23-year-old Brazilian was one of the biggest surprises of the 2023 French Open,
where he successfully qualified and reached the fourth round, including a
victory over world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
However,
his impressive performance on the court has been overshadowed by controversies
he has been involved in outside of tennis. Thiago Seyboth Wild was questioned
by a journalist in a press conference about accusations of domestic violence
raised by his ex-girlfriend, Thayane Lima, since 2021.
The world
No. 172 refused to answer the journalist's question, and in the days following
the incident, messages between the Brazilian player and his ex-girlfriend have
been published, in which he proudly mentions his Nazi roots. This has led to
criticism from fans.
"My
great-grandfather, my mother’s father’s father’s father… was Hitler’s
predecessor…. He was the one who brought him over from Austria and taught
Hitler the life,” he wrote according to O Globo.
